Is there a monster under the bed?
Our son was about 3 years old when we were alerted to the fact that there was a monster under the bed. Like many parents that went before us, this was the latest hump in the road for a much-desired smooth transition to bedtime.
Our amusement gradually dwindled as the pesky monsters extended bedtime and refused to leave so we could all go to sleep. It was time to act. We created a natural aromatherapy mist for our children to get rid of their night monsters, whilst at the same time adding a soothing blend of essential oils into the bedtime routine, that relaxed and calmed our kids. We called this mist little monster spray and we told our children if we sprayed it around the room the monsters would leave. Thankfully the monsters did leave each night and our children were a lot happier as a result.
Is aromatherapy safe for children?
The answer is, only some essential oils are safe to use. It’s important to stick to some basic rules. Firstly, we would never use essential oils on a baby. Secondly, for smaller children we restrict essential oil use to just two essential oils organic mandarin and lavender.
Lavender Essential Oil
A great all-rounder that can be used in your first aid kit due to its antimicrobial and antiseptic properties. It is also an emotionally supportive oil, lavender is said to relieve feelings of exhaustion, fear and anxiety and is especially good for soothing tired children
Mandarin Essential Oil
This has a mildly sedative effect; it is a safe remedy for the young and above all its scent is especially uplifting and works well on irritable children.
Combined, these two essential oils have a powerful therapeutic benefit. They can soothe over-tired and cranky children and can create an atmosphere of calm. If you decide to use these at home independently, they should always be diluted into a fixed oil like sunflower or jojoba. If you decide to use them in your own room mist with distilled water, ideally use a small amount of alcohol in the blend as water will grow bacteria and this could become unsafe for you and your child. It is also really important to shake up the bottle before you spray as essential oils and water don’t mix and you don’t want to spray concentrated essential oils around your child’s bedroom.
As children get older you can extend the range of essential oils you can use. However, we would recommend seeking the advice of an aromatherapy professional to advise you on the best remedy. Essential oils should always be used with a purpose in mind.
